Psyllium Husk Powder – Almost Entirely Made Up of Soluble Fiber
Psyllium husks come from a plant called Plantago ovata, which is mainly cultivated in India. Its small seeds have a thin outer husk that is particularly rich in soluble dietary fiber.
Our Psyllium Husk Powder contains these finely ground husks, without the seed kernels: approximately 90 g of dietary fiber per 100 g, around 85% of which is water-soluble.
What makes psyllium husks special becomes clear when you add them to water: they absorb liquid and form a soft gel. Smoothies thicken within minutes, overnight oats become creamier, and doughs become more pliable.
This natural swelling ability makes psyllium husks a versatile ingredient for thickening and binding foods without E-numbers.

What Psyllium Husks Do in the Kitchen
- Absorb large amounts of water: Psyllium husks can absorb many times their own weight in liquid. Scientific and technical sources report approximately 10–40 times their weight.
- Form a soft gel: Add a creamy, thick texture to smoothies, muesli, and baked goods.
- Support gluten-free baking: The gel helps provide structure and flexibility in recipes without gluten.
- Suitable for sweet and savory recipes: Their neutral taste makes them ideal for everything from soups to cakes.
- Easy to use: Simply mix in, allow to swell briefly, and enjoy. No lengthy soaking required.
A Natural Alternative to Common Binding Agents – Without E-Numbers
| Instead of… | Typical Usage | Suggested Psyllium Husk Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Guar gum (E 412) | 0.1–0.5% | Approx. 0.5–2% of flour weight |
| Xanthan gum (E 415) | 0.1–0.5% | Approx. 0.5–2% |
| Locust bean gum (E 410) | 0.2–1% | Approx. 0.5–2% |
| Modified starch (E 14xx) | 1–3% | Approx. 1–3% |
These are general guidelines, not exact 1:1 replacements. Results depend on the recipe. Psyllium husks absorb liquid and form a gel quickly, so start with the lowest suggested amount and adjust as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between psyllium husks and chia fiber?
Both are sources of dietary fiber, but their nutritional profiles differ.
Chia fiber also contains fat, including omega-3 fatty acids, and protein, and absorbs liquid more gradually.
Psyllium husks consist almost entirely of dietary fiber, predominantly soluble fiber, and contain very little fat. They absorb water much more strongly.
If you are looking for a fiber ingredient that also provides protein and omega-3 fatty acids, explore our Chia Fiber.
Why is drinking enough water so important?
Psyllium husks absorb considerable amounts of water due to their soluble fiber content. Without sufficient liquid, they cannot swell properly. That is why adequate fluid intake is particularly important.
Are psyllium husks the same as oat fiber?
No. Psyllium husks are rich in soluble, gel-forming fiber that absorbs liquid and creates a thick consistency.
Oat fiber, on the other hand, consists mainly of insoluble fiber and is primarily used to add structure and volume to baked goods.
They are not interchangeable on a 1:1 basis, although many baking recipes combine both.
Learn more about our Oat Fiber.
Why do psyllium husks swell so much?
Their high content of soluble dietary fiber allows them to absorb water and form a soft gel. This is why even one teaspoon can noticeably thicken a drink within minutes.
Is Psyllium Husk Powder gluten-free?
Yes. Psyllium husks are naturally free from gluten-containing grains. Our product has a gluten content below 20 ppm and can therefore be labeled gluten-free.
Psyllium husks are widely used in gluten-free baking to improve dough structure.
Are psyllium husks prebiotics?
Unlike acacia fiber, psyllium husks contain predominantly dietary fibers that are only partially fermented by gut bacteria.
Their main characteristic is their ability to absorb water and form a gel. Potential prebiotic effects are discussed in scientific literature, but research findings are not consistent.
Psyllium husks have also been extensively studied in relation to bowel function.
Where do the psyllium husks come from?
Our psyllium husks originate from India, where the seeds are cleaned, dehusked, and milled.
The husks are then further processed and packaged in Germany. This includes steam treatment for microbiological safety and X-ray inspection of every batch.
How should I store Psyllium Husk Powder?
Store in a dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. After opening, simply reseal the pouch tightly.
How to Use Psyllium Husk Powder
Fiber Drink: Stir one heaped teaspoon (approx. 5 g) into 200 ml of water or juice. Allow to swell briefly and drink promptly. Follow with another glass of water.
In Cooking & Baking: Mix 1–2 teaspoons into smoothies, yogurt, or overnight oats. For baking, add 10–15 g per 500 g of flour (2–3%), particularly in gluten-free recipes. For veggie patties and meatballs, mix 5–10 g into 500 g of mixture and leave to swell for 5 minutes before shaping.
Important: Start with one teaspoon daily and gradually increase the amount after one week (maximum 10 g per day). Consume each serving with at least 200 ml of liquid and aim for approximately 1.5–2 liters of fluids throughout the day.
